Company History

Founded on Vision. Built for Excellence.

From a pioneering start in 1974 to a leading architectural practice in the Southeastern United States

BDW Architects traces its roots to the late James I. Barganier (1946–2020), whose innovative vision launched the firm in July 1974. From our home in the heart of downtown Montgomery, Alabama, Jim’s ingenuity and remarkable works set the standard for what BDW would become—one of the top architectural firms in the Southeast. His commitment to purposeful design still guides our practice today.

Over the decades, the firm has earned a reputation for quality architectural design, state-of-the-art facilities, exceptional professional service, and technical expertise. Each project is approached with the same clarity of purpose that defined our beginnings: design that elevates performance, experience, and community impact.

BDW is led by two partners—Ray E. Williams, and Johnny B. Raines III—and supported by a deeply experienced team that includes registered architects, graduate interns, construction supervisors, skilled drafters, a dedicated marketing department, model builders, artists, photographers, and superior support personnel. Together, we honor Jim Barganier’s legacy by delivering thoughtful, enduring architecture for the clients and communities we serve.
